PHYSICAL AND NUMERICAL MODELLING OF HIGH-MACH AND HIGH-ENTHALPY FLOWS WITH SU2-NeMo AND TITAN

This seminar will provide an overview of the latest numerical studies of hypersonic flows performed with the open-source codes SU2-NeMo and TITAN.

The study includes fundamental problems such as the characterization of shock interference patterns in CO2-based mixtures.

The role of thermal and chemical non-equilibrium is discussed with respect to its role in establishing specific patterns of interactions that follow the classical Edney’s taxonomy.

The application of SU2-NEMO to system-level problems is also presented in relation to the analysis of destructive atmospheric re-entry.

Examples of re-entering spacecraft demise are studied by means of a multi-fidelity approach where NeMo is considered to provide high-fidelity prediction of aerothermal loads within the TITAN simulation framework.

Speaker:
Dr. Marco Fossati is Reader (equiv. to Full Professor) in Computational Aerodynamics at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of the University of Strathclyde.
His research interests are in the area of multiphysics computational aerodynamics. His expertise is in the field of high-speed and non-equilibrium flows, data-driven Reduced Order Modeling for aero(thermo)dynamics, with application to the study of fundamental flow physics of high-Mach high-entalphy nonequilibrium flows and the aerodynamics of next-generation manned and unmanned aircraft.
